04/09/2020

A new underground car park in the park

The three-level construction will offer 635 new parking spaces. The construction of the parking extension is also the opportunity to reconstruct the valuable park, which strengthens the relationship with the adjoining residential area and the Kapucijnenrei. The current view of the park and the north-eastern relief, which protect the Westmeers residential area, will be preserved as much as possible.

To respect the park as much as possible, the design and layout of the underground car park building has been completely attuned to the valuable trees in the park. The entrance hall and technical volumes are integrated into the park layout so that the open character of the park is not disturbed by high structures.

Reconstruction of the park

Once the underground car park is finished, the park will also be newly constructed. One of the most important walking routes between the station and the city center runs through the Koning Albert I park. To maintain the changing character of this promenade, only limited changes will be made to the location of the existing walking route in the park, and it will retain its winding, ascending and descending lines.

Need for a car park

Due to the increased capacity, the current queues, which arise at peak times on the ring road to enter the car park 't Zand, will be resolved to a large extent.

The construction of the parking will not generate any additional traffic and the current entry and exit system will be retained and improved.
